As we begin the New Year, we want to share an important update about the Social Supermarket and how it will operate from January 2026.
The Social Supermarket exists to help people stretch their food budgets a little further while offering choice, dignity, and a welcoming community space. We know how valuable this service is to many local households, and our priority is to make sure it can continue in a sustainable way.
Why we’re making a change
Over the past year, the cost of food has continued to rise. While we are incredibly grateful for donated items, not all of our stock is free. Some food is supplied by FareShare, which we pay for, and additional items are bought at full price so we can offer a wider and more reliable choice to shoppers.
After carefully reviewing our finances, we’ve made the difficult decision to introduce a small increase to help cover these rising costs and protect the future of the Social Supermarket.
What’s changing from January 2026
From January 2026, the Social Supermarket will cost:
£5.00 per shop
Each shop includes:
- 8 grocery items
- Free fruit and vegetables
- Free period products
- Free condoms
- Pet food, when donated
- Breakfast at the Supermarket Café
The Social Supermarket is designed to support your food budget, not replace it entirely, and we aim to keep it as accessible and welcoming as possible.
If you need more support
If you’re finding things particularly hard, please speak to a member of our team. We can discuss referrals to the local Foodbank, who may be able to offer additional help and connect you with other support services.
We would prefer not to introduce means testing and will continue to keep this under review.
Using the service with care
Our volunteers generously give many hours of their time to support the Social Supermarket and we rely on donations of cash or provisions from members of the public. If you feel able to manage without using the service, we kindly ask that you do so, helping us focus support on those who need it most.
The café is for everyone
We know how important community spaces are. You are very welcome to enjoy the Supermarket Café without shopping. If you’re able to make a small donation, it helps IP17 continue running this and other vital services.
Looking ahead
The Social Supermarket reopens on Tuesday 6th January 2026, and we look forward to welcoming you back.
Thank you for your understanding, kindness, and continued support. Together, we can ensure the Social Supermarket remains here for the people who need it most.
With best wishes for the New Year from the IP17 Trustees, staff, and volunteers.
